Galerie Ron Mandos proudly presents Daniel Arsham, Hans Op de Beeck, Mohau Modisakeng, Troika, Renato Nicolodi, Levi van Veluw and Katinka Lampe. Their works represent some of the most prominent artistic currents of the moment. Dealing with the fragility of the constructs on which early 21st century society is based, the works range from the political to the nostalgic and show us how rapidly the world is changing.

DANIEL ARSHAM
With an output ranging from drawing and sculpture to film and architecture, Daniel Arsham is a truly cross-disciplinary artist. Taking iconic objects from the millennial age as a starting point and rendering these in geological materials such as crystals and volcanic ash, he creates sculptures that seem familiar yet alienating. New in Arsham’s formal vocabulary are wrapped sculptures: pop cultural icons seemingly covered in fabric.

Daniel Arsham (US, 1980) is based in New York. His work has been shown at PS1, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; The New Museum, New York; The Athens Biennale and Carré d’Art de Nîmes. He currently has a solo exhibition at Modern Contemporary Museum, Amsterdam.

HANS OP DE BEECK
The latest work of Hans Op de Beeck is inspired by Renaissance Wunderkammers: collections of seductive curiosities. Op de Beeck stripped the objects bare of their beguiling colors and glaze: everything is a monochrome, matte ash-grey. The artefacts resemble fossilized gems or archaeological finds. Op de Beeck reflects on our complex society and the universal questions of meaning and mortality that resonate within it.

Hans Op de Beeck (BE, 1969) is based in Brussels. Previous solo shows were held at i.a. Art  Unlimited,  Basel;  MOCA  Cleveland;  Sammlung  Goetz,  Munich and Tampa  Museum  of  Art.  The artist  has  participated  in  group  shows  at Royal  Museum  of  Fine  Arts,  Brussels;  PS1, NY; Centre  Pompidou, Paris; The  Reina  Sofia,  Madrid;  ZKM,  Karlsruhe;  MACRO,  Rome; the  Whitechapel  Art  Gallery,  London and many more.

MOHAU MODISAKENG
Multi-award  winning  artist Mohau  Modisakeng  explores  how  we  understand  cultural,  political  and  social  roles in  post-colonial  Africa. During Performa 17 he choreographed Zion: a  street  procession through  public  spaces in New York, related  to  the city’s African-American  communities. With  this  body of work Modisakeng  draws  parallels  between  experiences of  displacement  within  the  context of South  Africa’s  history  of  racial  segregation  and  forced  removals  with  the  current  global  climate  of mass  migration.

Mohau Modisakeng (SA, 1986) studied  at  the  Michaelis  School  of  Fine  Art,  Cape  Town. In  2015  and  2017 he represented  South  Africa  at  the  Venice  Biennale.  He  has  exhibited  at MOCADA, NY;  Zeitz  MOCAA, Cape Town  and  IZIKO  South  African  National  Gallery,  Cape  Town.  His  work  is  included  in  collections  such  as  the  Johannesburg  Art  Gallery;  Saatchi  Gallery,  London and Zeitz  MOCAA.

TROIKA
The collective Troika investigates the ways in which the digital world crosses over into the physical one and how technological advancement influences our lives. For the series Borrowed Light, they take colorful gradients on photographic film as a starting point. The choice for film betrays Troika’s interest in the evolution of image-making techniques. The series follows their large-scale installation Borrowed Light commissioned by The Barbican, London.

Troika is formed by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel. Their work is part of the permanent collections of M+, Hong Kong; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; The Art Institute of Chicago; MoMA, New York; the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and Centre Pompidou, Paris. They produced installations for the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo and their work Dark Matter was shown at Unlimited, Art Basel. Borrowed Light is currently on view at the Barbican.

RENATO NICOLODI

The paintings and sculptures of Renato Nicolodi refer to archetypical buildings from past times and cultures. By stripping them from their original function, ornament and dogma the artist creates monuments, relics, and shrines that function as visual anchors, inviting visitors to reflect and meditate. In his works, there always is an element of the unknown beyond that which is visible.

Renato Nicolodi (BE, 1980) received his education at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Gent, and Sint Lukas, Brussels. His work is included in the collections of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the provinces of Oost-Vlaanderen and Vlaams-Brabant; the city of Genk; Achmea and the former Design Vlaanderen, as well as in many international private collections.

LEVI VAN VELUW
In his recent work, Levi van Veluw investigates the relation between the rational, the spiritual and the material. Even if spirituality is ultimately immaterial, most people practice their faith in places of worship, using sacred objects and performing holy rituals. What is this human desire to add a tangible dimension to faith? Where does idolatry begin?

The work of Levi van Veluw (NL, 1985) is collected by numerous museums in The Netherlands and he made installations for clients such as Hermès. One-person exhibitions were held at Marres (NL, 2016) and Domaine de Kerguéhennec (FR, 2018). This year, the artist has solo exhibitions at Tenuta Dello Scompiglio (IT) and Museum Het Hem (NL). His exhibition Beyond Matter is on view at Galerie Ron Mandos until May 11th.

KATINKA LAMPE
Katinka Lampe explores questions of identity and origin. Inspired by the diversity on the streets of her home town Rotterdam and by Herman Pleij’s writings on identity, her new series of portraits takes on questions of appropriation, shared history and lived experience. Lush in tonality, the works stay true to the artist’s ethereal style of portraiture. Lampe: ‘My goal is to make connections. I want to question, unsettle, move, and comfort.’

 

ABOUT Daniel Arsham

Born in 1980 in Cleveland Ohio, OH, USA
Lives and works in New York, NY, USA

New York based artist Daniel Arsham work explores the fields of fine art, architecture, performance, design and film. Raised in Miami, Arsham attended the Cooper Union in New York City where he received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003.

Soon thereafter Arsham toured worldwide with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as the company’s stage designer. The experience lead to an ongoing collaborative practice which continues as Arsham works with world renowned artists, musicians, designers, and brands.

Arsham’s uchronic aesthetics revolves around his concept of fictional archaeology. Working in sculpture, architecture, drawing and film, he creates and crystallizes ambiguous in-between spaces or situations, and further stages what he refers to as future relics of the present. Always iconic, most of the objects that he turns into stone refer to the late 20th century or millennial era, when technological obsolescence unprecedentedly accelerated along with the digital dematerialization of our world. While the present, the future and the past poetically collide in his haunted yet playful visions between romanticism and pop art, Daniel Arsham also experiments with the timelessness of certain symbols and gestures across cultures.

In 2008, Arsham co-founded Snarkitecture with architect Alex Mustonen. Snarkitecture is a collaborative design practice established to investigate the boundaries between the disciplines of art and architecture. Snarkitecture focuses on the reinterpretation of everyday materials, structures and programs to new and imaginative effect. The studio’s work includes installations, architectural environments and objects for a diverse range of clients such as Beats by Dre, Calvin Klein, COS, Design Miami, Gufram, Kith, New Museum, and Valextra.

ABOUT Hans Op de Beeck

Hans Op de Beeck was born in 1969 in Turnhout, BE
He lives and works in Brussels, BE

Hans Op de Beeck produces large installations, sculptures, films, drawings, paintings, photographs and texts. His work is a reflection on our complex society and the universal questions of meaning and mortality that resonate within it. He regards man as a being who stages the world around him in a tragi-comic way. Above all, Op de Beeck is keen to stimulate the viewers’ senses, and invite them to really experience the image. He seeks to create a form of visual fiction that delivers a moment of wonder and silence.

Over the past twenty years Op de Beeck realised numerous monumental ‘sensorial’ installations, in which he evoked what he describes as ‘visual fictions’: tactile deserted spaces as an empty set for the viewer to walk through or sit down in, sculpted havens for introspection. In many of his films though, in contrast with those depopulated spaces, he prominently depicts anonymous characters.

Hans Op de Beeck was born in Turnhout in 1969. He lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Op de Beeck has shown his work extensively in solo and group exhibitions around the world.

ABOUT Mohau Modisakeng

Born in 1986 in Soweto, South Africa
Lives and works between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Material, metaphor and the black body are the tools that Mohau Modisakeng uses to explore the influence of South Africa’s violent history that has been ignored in today’s society, on how we understand our cultural, political, and social roles as human beings in post-colonial Africa and in particular post-apartheid South Africa. Represented through film, large-scale photographic prints, installations and performances, his “work doesn’t start off with an attempt to portray violence but it becomes mesmerising because although we might recognise history as our past, the body is indifferent to social changes, so it remembers.”

Born in Soweto, an epicentre of black urbanity and cosmopolitan culture, the multi-award winning Mohau Modisakeng is a product of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. Mentored by Jane Alexander and predominantly working and training in sculpture, he completed his undergraduate degree in 2009 then completed his Masters degree at the same institution. He was awarded the SASOL New Signatures Award for 2011 and has exhibited at Armory Show, New York (2016); Saatchi Gallery, London (2012); Dak’Art Biennale, Dakar (2012); Focus 11 and Basel (2011). In 2013 Modisakeng produced an ambitious new video work in association with Samsung as a special project for the 2013 FNB Joburg Art Fair. His work is included in public collections such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery, IZIKO South African National Gallery, Cape Town and SAATCHI Gallery, London as well as significant private collections such as Zeitz MOCAA.

ABOUT Troika

Troika is a collaborative contemporary art practice formed by Eva Rucki (b. 1976, Germany), Conny Freyer (b. 1976, Germany) and Sebastien Noel (b. 1977, France) in 2003.

With a particular interest in perception and spatial experience, their collective works challenge our prescriptions of knowledge, control, and what it means to be human in an age of technology.

Troika’s work is part of the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum London, The Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA New York and the Israel Museum. In 2010, Troika was commissioned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to produce three site-specific installations for the UK Pavilion, designed by Heatherwick Studio, at the Shanghai Expo. In 2014 Troika was selected to present their work ‘Dark Matter’ at Unlimited, Art Basel.

ABOUT Renato Nicolodi

Renato Nicolodi was born in 1980, in Anderlecht, Belgium
He lives and works close to Brussels, Belgium.

The architectural work of Nicolodi is clearly monumental. The artist is inspired by classical architecture, which he uniquely processes. It is only when the viewer steps onto the work and inspects it from close range, that he can obtain a clearer understanding of the work, as if he is invited to take part in a visual and physical search within the architectonic forms he has created. Different vantage points and views reveal subtle games of light gradations with the constantly recurring subjective black space, that remains inaccessible for the viewer, coaxing one into reflection. Pure formalistic language is given an almost sacred priority.

Renato Nicolodi studied Audiovisual and Fine Arts at Sint-Lukas in Brussels, and is a laureate at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Gent. His work can be found in the SFMOMA, San Francisco; Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen; the collection of the province of Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium; the province of Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium; the city of Genk, Genk; The city of Lokeren, Lokeren; Ekard Collection, Wassenaar; Achmea collection, Zeist; Houthoff Buruma, Amsterdam; Cobra to Contemporary/The Brown Family Collection, and many other international private collections.

ABOUT Levi van Veluw

Levi van Veluw was born in 1985, in Hoevelaken, The Netherlands
He lives and works near Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Since graduating in 2007, Levi van Veluw has produced multi-disciplinary works that includes photographs, videos, sculptures, installations and drawings. This varied body of work has been showcased in many different locations across Europe and the United States, earning him a number of nominations and awards.

The artist first became known in 2008 with his solo exhibition Landscapes at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. This coincided with him being awarded the International Photo Award in New York for the photo series “Ballpoints”, and the selection of one of his video works for the Whitstable Biennale UK.

In 2010, the work of the artist was showcased in a series of major museum exhibitions, including the exhibition “Dead or Alive” at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem and Ars Electronica in Linz.

2013 saw the publication of the book “Origin of the Beginning”. This singular book is a work of art in itself, published in an edition of 1000 hand-signed copies. The book, which is widespread among collectors and enthusiasts, provides an overview of the artist’s work from 2006 to 2013, a rich oeuvre that includes photographs, drawings, installations, sculptures and videos.

The work of Levi Veluw has been exhibited internationally in leading museums and institutions, and is included in both public and private collections, such as the Borusan Collection, Istanbul; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar; Museum MORE, Gorssel; the KPMG Art Collection, Amstelveen; the Ekard Collection, Wassenaar; the Lakeside Collection, Rotterdam, and Cobra to Contemporary/The Brown Family Collection. In addition to his work in his individual practice, Levi van Veluw has also worked on commissions for private clients. In this way, he has collaborated, in 2012, with curator Marc Coetzee on the film “Family” in the frame of the “Films4peace” project. In 2014, van Veluw created for Hermès a life-sized site-specific installation for one of their main windows in Shanghai. Van Veluw’s works have also been widely shown at international art fairs such as, among others, The Armory Show New York, Art Brussels, Volta Basel, Unseen Amsterdam and the Barcelona Loop Fair Barcelona.

ABOUT Katinka Lampe

Born in 1963 in Tilburg, NL
Lives and works in Rotterdam, NL

Katinka Lampe traverses the realms of figurative, expressionist, and abstract painting in her soft, yet uncanny, portraits. Her works, though imbued with a sense of realism, are not meant to represent those that they depict. Resemblance is not the defining characteristic of these pieces. Instead, the artist sees the figures as visual impressions that, once transformed by her gaze, become representative of larger themes within society, rather than the individual.

Lampe often uses accessories loaded with connotation to provoke loose characterizations of theme and mood. The imposed roles played by her models, their poses, expressions, and their way of being dressed, mostly copied from magazines, the internet or old master paintings, obscure their personality and provoke deeper and subjective meaning in the minds of the viewers. Through these juxtapositions the artist explores important societal themes relating to identity, aging, color, and the ever-growing dependence on media.

Katinka Lampe is an artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She received her degree from the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost in ‘s Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally in a variety of galleries, museums, and prominent art fairs such as Museum Arnhem, Arnhem,NL: Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam, NL; Singer Museum, Laren, NL, Museum Jan Cunen, Oss, NL ; Untitled Art San Francisco, USA and Untitled, Art, Miami Beach, USA.
