Matias Salgado

Born in Buenos Aires in 1998, Matias Salgado started painting in his teenage years by attending courses and seminars with an emphasis on the construction of the human figure. In 2017 he started presenting his work in fairs and exhibitions, working along with collectors around the world. In 2023 Matias received his BA in Fine Arts from Academie Minerva in Groningen. Since then, his work features in private collections in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Malaysia, Thailand and the Netherlands.

Inspired by big source array of material, Salgado creates imagery based on popular narratives and discourses of his Argentine background. By incorporating personal memories into common places and objects, he makes them his own. When working with his subjects, he recreates scenes where elements of figuration and abstraction combine and compete, resulting in his concept of a ‘suggestive image’.

During the Official Opening on Saturday 29 July, Joop van Caldenborgh, founder of Museum Voorlinden, announced that Matias Salgado is The RM Young Blood Award winner of 2023. Winning the award means that a work by Salgado will be placed in the permanent collection of Museum Voorlinden.

Sunday bbq

In this reinterpreted painting of The Last Supper, the iconic scene is transformed into an Argentine barbecue (asado) setting. The painting captures the essence of a lively gathering around a traditional Argentine table, emphasizing the significance of barbecues as a cherished tradition for Argentine people. At the heart of the composition, a large table takes center stage, adorned with sizzling cuts of meat, chorizos, and vibrant vegetables. The enticing aroma fills the air, symbolizing the mouthwatering flavors and communal spirit associated with Argentine asados. Surrounding the grill, the disciples are reimagined as diverse friends and guests, embracing the joy of sharing a traditional Argentine barbecue. They engage in animated conversations, laughter, and revelry, reflecting the camaraderie and conviviality often experienced during these gatherings.

Pigs took power

This painting portrays a group of figures resembling Argentine politicians, but with pig-like characteristics adorning their faces. This satirical artwork serves as a scathing commentary on the rampant corruption prevalent in the country’s political landscape. The choice to depict the politicians as pigs symbolizes the perception of greed, dishonesty, and moral decay associated with those in power, shedding light on the detrimental effects of corruption on Argentine society.

Mafia porteña

In the enigmatic composition of a triptych painting, the viewer is confronted with a profound portrayal of the complex intertwining of the mafia and politics in Argentina. The figures within the artwork appear as not fully constructed, their forms blending with abstract elements, creating an unsettling and mysterious atmosphere. The side panels of the triptych are bathed in a luminous glow, illuminating the scenes depicted. Here, glimpses of hope, transparency, and justice are hinted at, suggesting that light still exists in the periphery, away from the central corruption. These panels evoke a sense of potential, where the truth may find its way and bring forth change.

Taken House

Taken House invites viewers to reflect on the evocative power of memory, and how it can manifest in both distorted and vivid forms. It prompts us to ponder the significance of our familial bonds, the impact of our childhood experiences, and the enduring connection we have with our roots. Through the combination of distorted figures and the contrasting indoor and outdoor settings, it captures the complexity and fluidity of our recollections. The triptych becomes a visual journey, inviting viewers to explore the layers of emotions and connections that resonate within the memory of home.
