Kamiel Scholten

My work focuses on humans and the surroundings they create for themselves.

This comes from my own interest and fascination for the way people are and behave. I want to show them as they are in their daily – unique – form of being. Therefore I often photograph them in their own environment, as this tells something about who they are, and at the same time it is a place where they are at ease.

However in other photographs the people are absent. Zooming in on their surroundings or the suggestion of their presence in a certain space can be as telling as the people themself.

The pictures in this project are part of a series I started around six years ago. It is a never ending project I just work on when I feel like going out at night to clear my head. For my graduation work I looked back on this body of work I gathered over the last years and picked out some of my favorites I took in Delft, the city I grew up in. Looking back through these photos made me think back. Back to Delft and everything I experienced there during my youth and to all the nights I spend outside trying to empty my head.

My aim with this series of nine photographs, presented in lightboxes, is to give the viewer the opportunity to lose themselves in the beauty of the nightly city. To just wonder at the lights behind the curtains of a stranger’s house and to forget about all the noise of the day.
